The Sonya Blackwell Impact Scholarship, established in honor of our founder Sonya Blackwell, recognizes young women who embody leadership, personal growth, and community involvement. This $500 scholarship supports students who have demonstrated a commitment to academic achievement and active participation in Her Uniqueness through L.O.V.E. Inc. programs.

​Simone Burrough, a proud graduate of Douglass High School’s Class of 2025, has been a dedicated member of Her Uniqueness Through L.O.V.E. Inc. Throughout her time with the organization, she has shown exceptional commitment to personal growth and community empowerment.  Simone Borrough plans to attend college in the fall to major in Psychology, with aspirations of becoming a licensed therapist focused on helping young women in underserved communities. She also intends to grow her nonprofit, Girlfriends, and continue advocating for mental health awareness and mentorship opportunities specifically designed for Black girls.

It has empowered me to embrace my individuality, build confidence, and become a stronger leader,” Simone shared. “Through this organization, I’ve gained mentorship, sisterhood, and a deep understanding of what it means to uplift other young women.”

Scholarship Overview:

The Sonya Blackwell Impact Scholarship is awarded annually to a deserving participant who has shown exceptional dedication and personal growth. The scholarship reflects the mission of Sonya Blackwell, empowering young women to pursue their goals while contributing positively to their communities.

Recipients of the Sonya Blackwell Impact Scholarship are nominated by the board members of Her Uniqueness through L.O.V.E. Inc. Nominations are based on a student’s leadership, participation, and the personal progress they have shown during their involvement with the organization. There is no application process, as the board carefully selects individuals who have made a significant impact within the community.

Eligibility Criteria:

• Active participation in Her Uniqueness through L.O.V.E. programs

• Demonstrates leadership qualities and commitment to personal development

• Consistent engagement in organizational activities and events

• Enrolled in a high school or post-secondary educational institution
